Now that your students know the board and how each piece moves, it’s time for one of the most exciting parts of chess: understanding check and checkmate.

This lesson makes these big concepts simple and accessible—even for brand-new players. Using clear visuals, examples, and guided practice, students learn how to identify threats, defend their king, and recognize when the game is won.

Students will learn:
✔️ The meaning of check
✔️ What makes a true checkmate (and what does not count!)
✔️ Beginner-friendly examples of real checkmate patterns
✔️ What is Stalemate and how to avoid it.

By the end of the lesson, students can confidently analyze a position and determine whether it’s check, checkmate, or neither.
