Description

Kick off your week with these bell ringer activities that will strengthen writing skills! Each day, students will have a passage to proofread and edit for mistakes or another task that will have them making improvements to sentences with these Make It Better Monday* activities.

With these short activities, students will get regular practice to help make them better writers. The editing activities contain some of the most common writing mistakes found in middle school and above, including grammar, punctuation, spelling (including homophones) errors. Other activities include adding descriptive details, sentence combining, and more.

*NOTE: These activities can be done on Mondays or any other days; see description below for details.

⭐️ What you'll get (Click the PREVIEW link above for a closer look)!

  • 35 short editing activities: proofreading and error correction, sentence combining, adding details to expand sentences, and other activities to improve the given text.

  • 35 Google Slides with the same task as on the student sheet, in case you wish to project it to the class (optional).

  • Student reference sheet with proofreading symbols and marks

  • 2 versions of editing activities: One to use as Monday bell ringers AND another without reference to Monday, so they can be used at any time.

  • Answer Key for editing corrections and example answers for open-ended tasks.

  • Teacher Notes with suggestions for use

NOTE: This resource also includes the editing activities on a weekly (Monday through Thursday) student response sheet. If you are using ALL the bell ringers in this series, you could use this version of the student sheet. If you are only using one or some of the bell ringers in this series, this sheet would not be used.

⭐️ How to use this resource

Distribute one of the student response sheets (as referenced above). Optional: you can also project the passage using the included Google Slides. Students follow the instructions to improve the sentence or passage. These are perfect as a weekly bell ringer, but can be used at any time you want to give students extra practice. Choose either Make It Better Monday or Make It Better Challenge versions as appropriate.

Perfect partner activity! For individual or collaborate work, but my favorite way to use these is to partner students up to help each other identify the problems and figure out the best way to make improvements. Talking through task and learning from each other is helpful to make the concepts stick.

Review solutions ask a class: Students may not catch all the errors or there may be other solutions that they had not considered. This is helpful to ensure understanding and to have exposure to varied sentence structures and different vocabulary options.
