"Making Ten” is an extremely helpful strategy to assist students with addition. Work through this activity to help students’ identify the numbers that easily make 10. This activity can be used to introduce the concept and then be placed into a math journal for reference. Try walking through the activity in small group to provide additional assistance.
Students will create a rainbow as they connect the friendly numbers that make ten. After completing the rainbow, students will write the number sentences that correspond with each color. The color coding really helps the visual learners see what numbers go together.
Included is a teacher reference page. This is what the final product should look like. Feel free to use the teacher reference page for a journal page as well.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
