Share

Description

The objective of this lesson is to develop a conceptual understanding of equivalent ratios through a multiplicative relationship.

The activities and quizzes are in English and Spanish (separate files for each language).

This digital lesson helps to develop concepts of Ratio and equivalent ratios. This lesson is part of the unit about Ratio.

The lesson explores the equivalent Ratio using fractions. The students have the opportunity to explore and analyze misconceptions to create equivalent fractions.

The lesson includes a tangram where students develop computer skills to rotate figures and create a beautiful butterfly. Also, a challenging word problem closes the activity to apply the knowledge gained.

Finally, the quiz provides insights about knowledge in using multiplication and division to create equivalent ratios. The quiz also has a section of word problems to apply equivalencies.

The activity and the quiz are designed to be used in Google Classroom. However, if the teacher decides to print out a hard copy, the layout is ready to print in the correct portrait formatting.

The activity and quiz address common core standards for 6th grade; however, some foundation standards for 5th grade are covered.

The unit includes:

Intro to Ratio

Equivalent Ratios

Double Line Ratio

Ratio Tables

Interpret multiplication as scaling (resizing), by:
Comparing the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated multiplication.
Explaining why multiplying a given number by a fraction greater than 1 results in a product greater than the given number (recognizing multiplication by whole numbers greater than 1 as a familiar case); explaining why multiplying a given number by a fraction less than 1 results in a product smaller than the given number; and relating the principle of fraction equivalence 𝘢/𝘣 = (𝘯×𝘢)/(𝘯×𝘣) to the effect of multiplying 𝘢/𝘣 by 1.
