"I have been looking for a while for a good resource for writing biographies. My students used this to write about an important figure from the founding of America. This resource breaks biographies down so it is kid friendly."

Description

A rigorous, scaffolded, clear cut biography report that will have your students researching and writing about the life of any person you choose! They will then culminate the biography with a fun project where they create a magazine on Google Slides or Power Point in the likeness of the biography subject!

Your students will first go through the complete writing process, with a great deal of scaffolding found in the form of Prewriting Graphic Organizers. Students will write their rough draft, then piece it all together to write a final draft.

After, the students will then create a "magazine", on Google Slides or Power Point, detailing the life of the biographical subject with their biography writing and pictures formatted to look like a real magazine!

Both the Biography and the Magazine have 4-point grading rubrics. There are also checklists and graphic organizers to help the students be successful with this project. Detailed instructions are also written on the magazine slides themselves so there is no question as to what the students need to do for this project.

This project pack includes:

  • Information Gathering Organizer
  • Introduction Organizer
  • Conclusion Organizer
  • Body Paragraph Organizer
  • Final Draft Paper
  • Checklist for Biography Writing
  • Rubric for Biography Writing
  • Rubric for Magazine
  • Link to the Google Slide File (to copy and place on Google Classroom)
  • Power Point version of the Magazine Project

Once the project is completed, you will have a project fit for display on a bulletin board! The students will be able to showcase student creativity as well as student learning.

This classroom tested project is something I have used in my own classroom with great success.

Prep is easy and painless. Everything you need for a winning biography project is here! Everything is suitable to run off and give to the students, with no need to cut and paste or make alterations. This mini-unit is a great way to hit many different standards across the curriculum AND have a wonderful display of student work.

This resource was PHENOMENAL for creating magazines to showcase at my school's Black History Month Family Night! Parents and admin were blown away by how professional our display looked. My gifted/high-achieving students had no problem following the notes provided and formatting their slides appropriately. I even took your template a step further and had my students create a crossword puzzle, word search, or magazine quiz and included it as an 8th slide (along with a short author biography and photo). I can not recommend this resource enough!!
