Description
This mini unit on biotechnology will get your students attention and keep them busy for at least 2 class periods. It includes:
A Google slides presentation on the basics of biotechnology plus guided, fill in the blank notes. Includes terms such as DNA, GMOs, cloning. Discussed benefits and concerns. Includes links to related youtube videos.
PLUS:
Kids love to to debate! Guide them through a constructive discussion on whether cloning should be allowed. This worksheet includes a fact sheet on the topic, space for students to record pros and cons, their opinion on the issue and how they would persuade others.
My students will gladly talk all day on this issue and love to share their opinions. I usually guide the discussion by having them toss a ball around. The rule is: if you have the ball you can talk, then you pass it to another person. They really get into it and I rarely am able to fit in all the kids' comments and discussion into a 45 minute period. Your kids will love it!
This worksheet can also be used as a worksheet without the debate component.
PLUS:
Combine biotechnology and letter writing! Students research a career in biotechnology (Job requirements, potential employers, educational requirements, salary range, etc.) and write themselves a letter from the perspective of a career counselor. Students put to use their online research skills, their knowledge of biotechnology, their persuasive writing skills, and practice the lost art of letter writing.
Clear expectations, an example letter and a grading rubric is included on the handout.
Inspired by RAFT (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) writing model.
Feel free to alter the document to fit your grade and level of rigor.
