Description

Students will experience migration firsthand in this bird migration pack!

First, students read about the ovenbird whose migration starts in South America and ends in the far regions of North America. A couple comprehension questions follow.

Next, students will run through their own migration challenge. This download includes station cards that students will encounter as they try to make a large loop around your classroom, gym, or outdoor area. They will run into all sorts of dangers which might cause them to die (eek!) and have them start over. Download the preview to get a glimpse!

Finally, students will be asked to list at least 3 dangers that a bird who is migrating may face. This is their exit slip and will be useful as an assessment tool for you.

My fourth graders LOVED the luck of the draw that this simulation entailed. Really, there's no way to do the migration simulation strategically because they must roll a die periodically through the simulation to tell them where to go next. Some birds live (Hurrah!), and some birds died. Those that perished were encouraged to start again.

I would set a time limit and see how many students could get through the simulation successfully, and some students could make it through more than once.

In a glimpse, this download includes:
- A bird migration reading and comprehension questions
- A bird migration simulation (station cards, you will need dice)
- An exit slip for assessment purposes

I bought this pack specifically for the bird migration simulation. Our story for the week was about bird migration, and was very dull. I added this into my lesson plans for the week, and it made the story come alive because they were able to "connect" with the challenges the bird faced. Some of my teammates inquired about the activity and purchased it, as well! Thank you!
