The Next Step in Guided Reading Book Study Guide ~ Literacy Professional Development

Click HERE to grab an additional Literacy Professional Development Book Study!

Goal: To increase effectiveness of small group literacy instruction.
This product is made for Literacy Coaches, Instructional Coaches, Administration or Lead Teachers to use with colleagues. It is a chapter by chapter book study guide for improving instructional practices in guided reading. The format is intended to be used through a forum such as Edmodo. The format is also set as an adult book club. Participants will read, reflect & respond to other participants generating critical evaluation of instructional practices & conversations that lead to the same end goal.
Do you Notice…
The small amount of professional reading teachers do these days? It’s not necessarily their fault, there are time constraints & their nose is always buried in papers to grade, lesson plans, being a secretary & etc… Therefore, the value of professional books by some of the best researchers & authors is lost. Teachers can lose sight of how easy it is to gain new knowledge & strategies from the best that can make a huge impact of their instructional craft.
As a Literacy Coach…
We are accountable for change. We are tasked with making the paths to change. We need to guide teachers through the path so that they can then change instructional strategies to increase student proficiency in multiple core areas. Using professional book studies through professional development as between session reading is a great tool. I use this format in addition to our face-to-face time together. It is “BSR” between session readings.
What is a teacher book study on Edmodo…
A group of teachers who meet through a forum where readers discuss the text & their reading experience. As a literacy coach I first pre-select a few texts that will strengthen our knowledge of a specific topic that we will be having professional development on. I then seek out feedback from participants. Once the text is selected, teachers purchase the text as a hard copy or digital copy. From there I prepare a schedule to keep the pace of the group’s reading & begin to facilitate the organization of the book study. I continue to read ahead of the group & prepare questions to direct their thinking with the end goal in mind. Participants read at their own convenience weekly. Each week I post in the Edmodo group the “task” for the week as well as emailing it out. Once participants complete their reading they log into our group on Edmodo & post their reflection, responses, etc… I comment back on each participants post. Participants are asked to respond to 3 friends as well. This is key.
No time for professional conversations…
This is a HUGE VALUE to me as well as all teachers. Teachers rarely have time in a school year to discuss anything geared towards their instructional goals. Time is always a problem. Using the Edmodo forum allows teachers who all have the same purpose & goal in mind to discuss specific points of a topic. The rule of responding to 3 friends is the most valuable piece of this book study format other than reading the content itself. The conversation they have amongst themselves is nothing short of professional reflection, learning & connectedness.
In this product you will receive…
• Guide to implementation & use.
• PowerPoint of pre-made chapter slides for participants. The date of the assignment is editable.
• Title page for you to use when setting up.
