Description

Have you ever heard of a botany hero? What if a botany hero or heroine came along to inspire young people to investigate the world around them, stimulating an interest in natural science?

Shanleya is just such a heroine in the story Shanleya's Quest: A Botany Adventure for Kids Ages 9 to 99. The story communicates botany and evolutionary concepts in a metaphorical format, ideal for the way young people process information. Through the story, students can grasp the fundamentals of the origins of life, the process of evolution, the tree of life, and the immense amount of time that has passed along the way.

The story also presents real plant identification skills to enable students to recognize monocots and dicots and to identify eight major families of plants and some of their properties and uses. The companion game is designed to exercise those plant identification skills, anchoring the basic concepts in a way that students may ultimately use them outside the classroom.

I love this unit and love Elpel's books. His website (http://www.hollowtop.com/) is extensive with many resources! His books, Botany in a Day & Shanleya's Quest are great tools for learning about botany in a practical way. I also appreciate the focus on edibles and medicinal plants, which makes the study of botany more useful to the students. The Cambridge 9th graders, that I shared Elpel's work with, still talk about it 2 years later!

Thank you for this to add to the book and the cards. I am actually reading the story to K-2 and they love it and ask for it over and over. We have now started with the cards and sorting and memory games. I leave them out and they are even used during free choice. They come to me on the playground and tell me about the flowers they are finding or bring them to school from home. Great resource!!
