Description

Not your grandfather's way of performing multiplication!

Students seem to be able to do 1x1 and 2x1 multiplication problems without issue. However, as soon as they are introduced to 2x2 multiplication problems it all goes out the window. In this case, the standard algorithm doesn't do anything but confuse them and make learning that much more difficult.

I created this after I discovered the "Box Method" (aka the Area Model) of multiplication that breaks each problem into partial products. Students seem to be able to grasp this method far easier than the standard algorithm and are able to experience success and gain confidence. I have been told that in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades that this format will be familiar when they begin working on factoring polynomials.

This is not a worksheet to promote speed. It addresses the need for students to be more meticulous and accurate in their calculations while stressing place value relationships. Use as an alternative practice for those that struggle with the standard algorithm.

Included in your purchase are 2 worksheets. One for 3x2 multiplication and another for 2x2 multiplication.

Resource was perfect for students who experienced some challenges with the various multiplication strategies. Perfect for small groups. It would be nice to have a larger size blank grid in order to project it and walk a larger group through the work.

I just updated this with a blank grid. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. Thank you for the suggestion.
