Description

Brain breaks are important times in the day. The best brain activities train the brain to have a break so that students can focus and learn. These activities are designed to brain train not brain drain.

Teach students the difference between behaviors and activities that promote learning and focus and ones that drain your focus.

This mini-unit is chock-full of fresh ideas to get kids learning and focused first thing in the morning in the first month of school and/or throughout the year (especially at natural breaks such as after winter break).

Included:

  • The rationale for self-directed learning and critical thinking

  • Brain train vs Brain drains lesson with pocket chart cards for students to discuss and determine as a whole class what behaviors are good for learning and focus and which ones "drain your brain".

  • 20 Brain Task Cards with ideas that get kids thinking! These can be laminated and reused or given to students to glue into notebooks or to write on the back of each card.

  • 16 journal prompts that are designed to get kids thinking about things like courtesy, kindness, reliability, hard work etc.
  • 8 different bookmarks with inspirational sayings in kid-friendly language based on school supplies.

These activities can be used as a center as well.

You can use this mini-unit all on its own or as a great companion to Mindful Brains Mindful Hearts

Brain Train is best suited for 2nd- 4th-grade students. (2nd-grade students may need support to make sure they understand the task cards but the concepts are 2nd-grade friendly.) Many of the tasks and journal prompts can be drawn out with 1-2 supporting sentences as an adaptation.
