Description

This project has students make a budget for taxes, food, transportation, clothing, entertainment, utilities, and housing. This project takes about a week to guide students through it. The best thing about his project is that is has kids talking about their future. Some kids love it because they realize they can afford a boat and go on vacations while other students it is a wakeup call if they don’t shape up. You could walk 6th graders through this if you make it simple or you can go more in depth for 8th graders. This includes teacher notes and a draft email to send to parents if you want help in your class with this project.

Pretty solid, could be a bit more rigorous

Met expectations
Would purchase more
This is something that would most likely be best for the lower level elementary kiddos

This resource was very helpful in our unit on personal finance. I made some modifications to better align with the needs of my students but overall, the format and potential for student engagement is excellent! I made copies and we focused on one area a day which resulted in a week-long (or so) learning activity. I enjoyed having discussions with the students about their financial choices. I had a conversation with them as we got started that although the salaries are correlated to educational level, that's not always true! (life circumstances happen to students that are sometimes beyond their control - dropping out or delaying further education - and many people I know who didn't go to college make a lot more money than I do and I have the equivalent of almost 8 years of higher education.

I really liked this project. I did modify parts of it to accomodate the time I had with my students in class. But overall fun and engaging.
