Improving reading comprehension skills takes time and patience. Beyond just reading and answering questions, it is important to build up the foundational skills needed. One of these foundational skills in background knowledge. This resource is designed to give your students a boost and get them started building background knowledge that they can use for future learning.

Four weeks worth of activities include:

  • Themed book lists

  • Vocabulary label worksheets for:
    • Space items
    • Solar system
    • Continents of the earth
    • Camping items
    • Snow / winter items
    • Doctor / medical items

  • Categorization worksheets for:
    • Living and Non-living
    • Animal classification

  • Timeline pages:
    • Blank personal timeline
    • Simple U.S. Timeline with four years/events to cut and paste

  • Plus tips and ideas for more ways to build background knowledge

These activities are designed for second and third grades, but will also work for the end of first grade when students are reading well. Answer keys are included.
