Description

Students use "building block shorthand" to decompose fractions and model equivalent fractions and addition with whole and mixed numbers.

These Google Slides provide students with an example and two different problems to solve - with building blocks!

A key for the shorthand is embedded on each slide and the students can simply drag and drop the symbols of the block pieces into the slide. Then they use the text box to type out an equation for their model.

The step-by-step directions are written at the bottom of each slide and can be edited to suit your needs.

As an optional extension, students could take it offline and build their models with real building blocks (like Legos). This activity could be done in school or remotely, makes a good challenge for students in need of enrichment, and will be loads of fun for everyone!
