Description
Teach students the structure of DNA with this student centered, cut and paste lesson. Students will use dice to randomly generate a 5-base DNA sequence, color a template strand according to their sequence, and then color, cut out and glue on the antiparallel, complimentary strand.
Concepts Covered
• DNA is a polymer
• A nucleotide is the monomer
• Structure of a nucleotide
• 4 Nitrogenous Bases (A, G, C & T)
• 3’ - 5’ direction
• Antiparallel
• Complimentary Base Pairing
Materials Needed: Student handouts, scissors, glue and coloring utensils.
More genetics lessons:
- Intro to Gregor Mendel Genetics (slides and structured note)
- Using Genetics to Build Pea Plants (student centered cut and paste)
