Description

LESSON 1:Introduction to the polar and rectangular forms unit, which describes in detail the relationship between polar and rectangular coordinates. This lesson includes important skills, like how to change from rectangular to polar coordinates as well as from polar to rectangular coordinates. Students DISCOVER many important formulas and connections, such as WHY we use arc-tangent to find theta in quadrants 1 & 4, and why we use (arc-tangent PLUS pi) to find theta in quadrants 2 & 3.

LESSON 2:Introduces converting polar equations to rectangular, and vice versa. Reviews converting polar coordinates to a rectangular coordinate, and vice versa. Using the converted polar equations and then graphing them by hand: circles & horizontal/vertical/diagonal lines. Plotting polar points, both where r>0 and r<0. Reviews equation of circles & the Completing the Square method (needed for circles). Students will be using unit circle knowledge to help them graph a Rose polar equation! Presents pictures of different graphs of polar equations [Limacon, Rose, Spiral, Cardioid, Lemniscate, Spiral of Archimides] and how they are used in the real world.

If you are interested in telling students information and formulas without any details/explanation as to WHY and HOW things occur, then these lessons are not for you. The purpose of these lessons is for students to UNDERSTAND, not to memorize information.

SPLIT INTO TWO DAYS [24 Slides]:

DAY 1

- Class worksheet reviews graphing polar coordinates with coterminal angles, and with both r>0 and r<0.

- The back of the class worksheet also reviews the equation of a circle and the completing the square method. These skills are crucial in converting polar equations into rectangular equations [mainly vertical & horizontal lines, diagonal lines, and a circle].

- Presents students with various types of polar graphs such as Limacon, Rose, Spiral, Cardioid, Lemniscante, and Spiral of Archimides. Also shows how some of these are in the real world. For example, the cardioid polar equation models a microphone sound.

DAY 2

- Review from Day 1

- Scaffolded class worksheet that helps students easily graph a rose petal based off a polar equation, and using unit circle knowledge to obtain the polar coordinates.

------------------------------------------------------------------

CHECK OUT MY BUNDLES:
