Common Core Math- 1.OA.3, 1.OA.4, 1.OA.6, 1.OA.7, 2.OA.1, 2.OA.2
As teachers have been asking "How do I teach these subtraction strategies?", I realized that in order to do this, we really need to build that conceptual understanding of subtraction. As a result, I started developing some videos to model how this might rolllout in the classroom.
This is the first video in a series of subtraction videos that would help teachers in Grades 1-2 teach subtraction in a way that really embeds the mathematical practices, gets students talking about subtraction, and allows them to think about subtract beyond simply "taking away". When implementing Common Core State Standards, the expectation is that students deeply understand subtraction, versus simply being able to figure out the answer.
In this first brief session for subtraction, I envision this being a "math talk" activity. It will probably take approximately 5-10 minutes. I challenge you as a teacher to facilitate this session by asking questions...rather than "telling them what they should know about subtraction".

good insight I am just learning the whole brain way so it was good to see
Thanks! I will continue to post more as I get them developed. Getting students to engage in the learning, moving, responding in some way is key!
