CER Introduction: PowerPoint and Activity

This product is a great resource to introduce CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) to students in order to help them write informative papers.

The PowerPoint includes an introductory slide that gets students thinking about writing papers before going into definitions for Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning. At the end of the slides, there is a quick write for students to practice what they just learned by making a short CER for why ice cream is the best dessert.

After going through the PowerPoint, the activity can be give as an in class assignment or homework. In this activity, students will be asked to read an article and answer questions to help them find where the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning are in the article. This allows them to see how they can incorporate these components when they write their own CER.
