Description

This CER Science Foldable is a versatile, hands-on tool that supports students as they build their understanding of the Claim–Evidence–Reasoning writing framework. Designed to fit perfectly in science interactive notebooks, this foldable can be used with any science topic—making it an easy, reusable resource for teachers throughout the year.

The foldable includes three labeled tabs (C–E–R). Students simply cut along the dotted lines, fold on the solid lines, and glue down the designated side (guided by a glue icon). Behind each tab, students write their claim, evidence, and reasoning for the lesson or investigation. The included answer key clarifies what each letter represents and what type of writing belongs under each tab, making it simple for teachers to guide students or offer support.

How This Resource Helps Educators

  • ✔️ Supports scientific writing: Students practice the CER structure in a clear, organized format.
  • ✔️ Works with any lesson: Use it for labs, demonstrations, readings, phenomena, or assessments—just plug in your topic.
  • ✔️ Engages students: Cutting, folding, and interactive notebook placement increase ownership and understanding.
  • ✔️ Easy prep: Icons show students exactly where to cut and glue, reducing classroom confusion.
  • ✔️ Consistent routine: Teachers can reuse this foldable for every CER activity, helping students master the process over time.
  • ✔️ Aligned to NGSS practices: Encourages evidence-based explanations and scientific reasoning.

This foldable is perfect for science teachers looking to make CER writing more accessible, interactive, and meaningful for their students.

NGSS5-ESS1-1
Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. Assessment is limited to relative distances, not sizes, of stars. Assessment does not include other factors that affect apparent brightness (such as stellar masses, age, stage).
NGSS5-LS2-1
Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and the Earth. Assessment does not include molecular explanations.
NGSSMS-LS2-4
Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations. Emphasis is on recognizing patterns in data and making warranted inferences about changes in populations, and on evaluating empirical evidence supporting arguments about changes to ecosystems.
