Description
AP Calculus: The Chain Rule – Lesson & Circuit Training Activity (3.1)
Help your AP Calculus students master the Chain Rule with this engaging lesson and Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) circuit training activity!
Students will gain confidence applying the Chain Rule to calculate derivatives of composite functions.
Students Will Learn To:
- Identify inner and outer functions
- Apply the Chain Rule correctly and efficiently
- Apply the Chain Rule multiple times
- Combine the Chain Rule with the Product and Quotient Rules
- Use the Chain Rule to find derivatives from a table of values
- Apply the Chain Rule to find the equation of a tangent line
What’s Included:
- 4 pages of guided notes with clear examples and step-by-step explanations
- Quick Check / Entrance Ticket (2 versions) for formative assessment
- Circuit Training Worksheet (BTC Activity)
- Fully worked-out solutions for all materials
- PDF and editable Word versions of the lesson and quick checks for flexible classroom use
About the Circuit Training Activity:
Circuits are a fun, self-checking way to keep students engaged and thinking critically! Students begin at cell #1, solve the first problem, and then search for their answer in another cell. That cell becomes #2, and the process continues until they complete the full circuit — ending back at cell #1 confirms their answers are correct!
This Circuit Training activity is versatile and can be used as classwork, homework, or a study guide. It also works perfectly as a Building Thinking Classrooms–style activity (Peter Liljedahl). Students can collaborate in groups of three at Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces (VNPS) such as whiteboards. Each group receives one circuit worksheet and one marker—encouraging active engagement, discussion, and deeper understanding of the Chain Rule.
These items can be purchased separately:
3.1 The Chain Rule Complete Editable Lesson, Quick Check, Full Solutions
3.1 Chain Rule Circuit Training with Full Solutions, BTC Activity
