Description

Turn solving equations into a crime-solving investigation students actually care about. Students solve two-step and multi-step equations across six crime scenes to uncover clues and identify the suspect.

Nothing like a good criminal investigation to liven up equations! In this project, students will work in teams to investigate the culprits of six fictional thefts. The criminal has left six messages, layered with algebra. Teams will work to build a case and present their findings to the court. Hopefully, they are convincing enough to win the verdict.

I like to use these puzzles as a review before the unit test. The puzzle-solving hook causes many different students to engage in solving traditionally mundane problems. Be the cool teacher :-)

In this 20-page document, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and six crime scene puzzles.

This puzzle includes problems featuring the following skills: Translating Verbal & Algebraic Equations, Solving Different Equation Types, Using Formulas

An answer key has been added to the end of the file for your convenience.

Solve linear equations in one variable.
Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form š˜¹ = š˜¢, š˜¢ = š˜¢, or š˜¢ = š˜£ results (where š˜¢ and š˜£ are different numbers).
Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
