Enhance student engagement with this Speed Equation Activity, designed to help students master solving for speed, distance, and time through an interactive and creative approach. This color-by-number resource features 12 real-world word problems alongside an informative nonfiction passage, reinforcing key math concepts in an engaging way. Some problems require basic unit conversions involving hours, minutes, and seconds.
Perfect for upper elementary and middle school students, this activity blends problem-solving with artistic expression. This hands-on math activity is ideal for classrooms looking to combine learning and creativity while strengthening essential math skills.
How do I use Color by Numbers activities?
These color by numbers activities are print and go/low prep! I suggest printing the student answer worksheet and coloring page back to back.
Color by Numbers are versatile, fun and engaging. In my classroom we use them as:
- In-class Worksheets
- Test Review
- Formative and Summative Assessment
- Homework Assignment
- Extra Credit Assignment
- Extension Activity for Early Finishers
- Emergency Sub-Plan
- Science Station Activity
Coloring also has the added benefit of reducing anxiety and helps students stay focused. My students usually take one 50-minute class period to complete them and they look great on your walls for Open House.
What will you find in this download?
1 Student Answer Sheet with Key
1 Color By Number Sheet with Key
1 Nonfiction Text Passage
1 Unnumbered coloring sheet for use as a mindful coloring activity.
➤ Access to a Google™ Slides editable version of the question sheet where you can change the wording of the questions or create different questions to match your needs.
Because I know that students are tech savvy and can easily find answer keys online, the actual color-coded key is not shown in the thumbnail. The correct full color answer key is included when you download the resource.
Note: While the activity uses only 12 colors, it was designed using the 24 pack of coloring pencils from the well-known yellow and green brand whose name is synonymous with crayon. If students do not have access to this brand/size, you/they can substitute colors as needed. Usually what I tell students is to simply cross out the color on the answer page and write down the color they used.

Thank you for the feedback. I have reuploaded the file to include the conversion of hours to minutes to seconds at the top of the question page.
