Description

In this lab, students will learn all about motion and calculating speed. Students will explore what happens to the speed of a toy car when the height of a ramp is increased, and then construct an explanation to summarize the motion of a toy car by its position, direction of motion, and speed in respect to the starting point.

This lab is SO easy to set up because it uses simple materials!

What is included in this lab for calculating speed?

  • teacher’s guide with information about the lab and setup
  • students’ lab sheet 
  • students’ lab sheet key example
  • CER framework template, CER Framework with claim
  • CER framework key example
  • student lab sheet (optional) to create a new experiment
  • 10 slide EDITABLE presentation to use during lab

Materials needed (for each group of students):

  • a toy car
  • 3 books of the same size (like textbooks)
  • a “ramp” (a piece of paper or a piece of cardboard)
  • stopwatch or timer, measuring tape
  • tape
  • recording sheets (included in this set)

How is the lab set up?

  • Tape a piece of paper (or cardboard) to the edge of one textbook. 
  • Let go of the toy car at the top of the ramp.  Measure its distance and time of travel. It should be measured in centimeters and seconds.
  • Repeat twice, adding a book each time.

⭐ Students have the opportunity to create a hypothesis, collect data, and draw conclusions.

⭐ In addition, students will complete a CER to construct an explanation to summarize the motion of the toy car during the lab.

This lesson pairs well with NC Essential Standard: 7.P.1.1 and other state standards related to motion and calculating speed. This will align with NC new standard PS.7.1.1.
