Description

Looking for a self-checking digital activity to engage Calculus students who are practicing calculating related rates in applied contexts? In this no prep digital activity, students will use derivatives to solve real-world problems involving rates of change.

In the self-checking Google Sheets activity, Triple 7 Jackpot, students must correctly solve a related rate problem to scratch off their digital lottery ticket. As students correctly answer questions, more of the scratch-off card is revealed. After correctly answering all the questions, students check over their card to see if it is a winner. The students continue to answer questions until they have scratched off the entire card. Who will have the lucky lottery card(s)?

In theory, there is a 15% chance of each student winning; however, this amount is subject to random selection and the actual data may not match the theoretical probability. Winning cards are not guaranteed until all questions are answered correctly. Just for fun, it is suggested the instructor provide a small prize to any student who reveals a winning card.

The students answer the questions in any order they prefer. After solving the question on a whiteboard, scratch paper, or the provided workspace, students type their final answer into the appropriate cell. If correct, the students receive immediate feedback by revealing part of the lottery ticket and the appearance of a check mark next to their answer.

In contrast, when students answer incorrectly, their answer turns red to let them know they should go back and revise their answer or seek help from their instructor.

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS DO NOT NEED PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF GOOGLE SHEETS TO ENJOY THE ACTIVITY. HOWEVER, PLEASE BE SURE TO GIVE EACH STUDENT A COPY OF THE RESOURCE SO THEY DON'T ACCIDENTALLY EDIT YOUR COPY.
