Description
This project is a way to give students a chance to show their creative sides while applying what they have learned about calculating volumes. The project has two components: a story and a poster. The students can use their creativity to write a story involving some aspect of volume. A description of the project to be given to the students is included as well as scoring rubrics for the story and the poster. Rubrics can be copied and passed out to students so they are aware of the evaluation criteria.
The project can be completely customized to meet your class needs. You can give specific volume problems to use, adapt the idea to another concept, etc. The rubrics can be adjusted or changed. How the project fits your grading can be determined by you. What I did was count this project as two quiz grades. Once the projects were submitted, I used one or two class periods to allow the students to present their projects. That worked well especially a day or two before any major break. I also displayed the posters in the classroom and let the students score the posters using the rubrics. I scored them as well and compiled the results.
I have used this project for several years and found it to be very successful. It gives students a non-mathematical way to have some impact on their grade. Also, it can be good to do as the stress levels in the class start to get too high. This project can be a good chance for the class to get a breather.
