Candy Corn Lab
Share

Description

This worksheet includes all the steps to complete the Candy Corn Lab. You just need supplies!

This lab is designed to help students make cross-curricular connections between math and science. There is a large amount of data analysis including finding the average, mode, and median as well as graphing the data.

For this experiment, I allowed each student to have their own cup and gave them a specific liquid so that we could get several measurements of candy corn.

You can also decide how long you want the candy corn to be submerged in each liquid depending on the amount of time you have to do the experiment.

I did this as a demo while we did another activity since there is a lot of wait time. We also added a couple different solutions that the kids chose: light soda, dark soda, and vinegar. They were excited to see the results and were even more excited when their predictions were correct.

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
