Description

Capacitor- charging and discharging a capacitor through a resistor:

Show, in 3D, how a capacitor works...

This simulation shows a capacitor in three states:

  • Charging
  • "Off"
  • Discharging

A switch is used to select a state.

The simulation shows electrons moving appropriately, the charge on each plate, cell orientation, the correct orientation of polar molecules in a dielectric and correct values. The graphs, when expanded, show the recurring time constant.

Choose to show:

  • Graphs (I/t, Q/t, V/t with time constants)
  • A dielectric
  • The electric field
  • A light bulb: brightness changes with current.
  • Labels/values
  • Information page

Change:

  • Capacitor resistance
  • Capacitor plate area
  • Capacitor plate separation
  • Charging voltage
  • Permittivity of the dielectric
  • Insertion depth of the dielectric
  • This simulation is 3D: with your mouse or finger you can zoom , pan, and change your point of view.

This application, once downloaded, is self-contained (like all the others here)... it doesn't need an internet connection. It will work on any device that has a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Edge...) and a screen. Smart phones will work, but the screen will be found to be a bit small.

This application will work on devices that have a keyboard, or have a touch screen, or both. The file size of the application is small, about 0.8 Mb. The application opens in all recent popular computer browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera) and Chromebooks. Motion Graph Match does work on iPads, Androids and iPhones. An Android phone or iPhone is too small for the application to work well. If you download it directly into an iphone, tablet or similar, the simulation will not run unless opened using a browser. This simulation only works in a browser :-)
