•Text Features Scavenger Hunt – used as a center or station
How to Use this Resource:
•Teach: Introduce text features over time using these resources. Create a classroom anchor chart introducing 3 text features per day. At the same time, students can create their own anchor chart in their journal using the printouts provided. Their personal anchor chart will fill up 3 to 4 pages in their journal if you use the T-chart template. Use this template or have students create their own T-chart in their journals to save paper. This personal anchor chart will serve them all year when they cannot remember the names of certain text features, and they need to review it quickly. It will also serve as an answer key for students to refer to when they complete the centers provided.
•Center #1: Students work with a partner to quiz each other on nonfiction text features. They can use their completed nonfiction text features anchor chart in their journal. Set a timer and have students quiz each other by reading one side of the T-chart and another student finding the match in their journal. Each student can tally their points as they find the correct match.
•Center #2: After students have created their own personal anchor chart, create a center with these cards that students will match during independent center or station time. Use the student sized resource (or the anchor chart sizes if you want it bigger) and cut and laminate. I let students use dry erase markers and create large T-charts on the desks (they usually need 3 desks to get all the text features to fit) to complete this center. They, then lay out all the text features in a straight line, no overlapping. They find the matching pairs to answer the question: “How does this help the reader?” After they match all the cards, they will check their work with the student anchor chart in their journals. Finally, students record their work by writing down 3 of the features that are most difficult for them on a recording sheet or in a journal.
•Center #3: Use the Informational Text Scavenger Hunt worksheet as a station. Put this worksheet with a bucket of good nonfiction books that have many text features. Have students read the books as they hunt for text features and record them on the recording sheet.
Texas TEKS: 2.6c, 2.9dii, 2.10c, 3.6c, 3.9dii, 3.10c, 4.6c, 4.9dii, 4.10c
