Description

Build number sense and fluency with integers and fraction operations and boost understanding of multiplying and dividing with this card sort! This activity encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and deeper understanding of how the multiplicative inverse property.

Students match multiplication and division expressions that are equivalent, reinforcing that integer rules with multiplying and dividing, as well as the multiplicative inverse property: dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.

🌟Why teachers love it?🌟

  • perfect for group collaboration
  • great student practice
  • versatile & easy to implement
  • promotes deeper understanding of concepts
  • builds number sense & fluency

Use this in your 6th-7th grade math class. This activity is great for a warm up, review day, independent or partner practice as stations, or spiral review activity.

How it works:

Cut and bag the cards ahead of time to have ready for each group of students. Students will use their knowledge of multiplying and dividing integers and fractions to match expressions that are equivalent. They will write pairs on their recording sheet and explain their reasoning.

Included in this resource:

✅24 student cards

✅optional student recording sheet

✅Answer key

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.
Understand that integers can be divided, provided that the divisor is not zero, and every quotient of integers (with non-zero divisor) is a rational number. If 𝘱 and 𝘲 are integers, then –(𝘱/𝘲) = (–𝘱)/𝘲 = 𝘱/(–𝘲). Interpret quotients of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.
