Description
This parent-friendly handout is intended to support carryover/generalization of language-building strategies that SLPs frequently use with young children.
The format of this language development training is a 2-week ‘homework’ schedule for caregivers with specific instructions of ways to implement strategies each day for 14 days in order to increase the habitual use of such strategies at home and during natural opportunities.
This training guide can be a big help in early intervention/early childhood special education to maintain accountability and ease of understanding when teaching key strategies to caregivers.
Included in the 14 days of homework are:
- Core language strategies like communication temptations, self talk, parallel talk, expansions, and extensions
- Basic principles of language development like modeling, imitating, and reciprocity
- Different types of language/parts of speech like prepositions, describing words, and WH-questions
I recommend that you encourage the parents you work with to hang these handouts on the refrigerator or somewhere very visible in the home as a visual reminder each day!
