This is a project that is designed to be used to incorporate real world math including finding percent off of an item, calculating sales tax and writing checks. This was designed for a 5th grade math class but would probably work for a 6th or 7th as well.
* You will need advertisements from various stores to complete this project. I use Wal Mart ads, academy, kohls, bed bath and beyound. Anything will work.
Students will find 10 items in advertisements and calculate percent off from a table I made. They will also find sales tax on each item they buy. They will see how much they saved from the sale and at the end write checks for each item bought.
An example page is included as an intro on how to calculate percent off and sales tax. You can use this as your whole class instructions before the project.
Then end product should be a display of items students bought with their before and after price and what they spent. I use long construction paper for them to present these.
