Description

Looking for a fun way to review cells with your students? They will have a blast playing spoons!

Number of players:
4

Materials needed:
score card, a deck of game cards, and 3 spoons

Goal:
To be the first to collect 3 of a kind (word, definition & picture)

Setup:
Decide how many vocabulary words you want to use for the game. You need a minimum of 4 words (1 word for each player). The more words you use, the more challenging the game will be. Find the words, definitions & picture cards for each of the words you are going to use and place all of the cards in a pile. Place the spoons in the middle where it’s easy for everyone to reach for them. Then, shuffle the cards & deal 3 to each player.

Gameplay:
All 4 players will simultaneously choose 1 card from their hands & pass that card, face down, to the opponent on their left. Each person will then pick up the card he/she received from the opponent on their right. Each player can never have more than 3 cards in his/her hand at a time, which means that a player cannot pick up a new card BEFORE passing 1 to the left.

When a player collects 3 of a kind (a word, definition & picture card), as subtly as possible, he/she should take a spoon & place it in front of him/herself. When this happens, every other player must grab a spoon as quickly & quietly as possible.

What to do after each round:
The player that ends up without a spoon, must tell the player who first grabbed a spoon to prove that he/she has 3 of a kind. If the first player to grab a spoon does, in fact, have a matching set of cards (word, definition, and picture), the player without a spoon will have to add an “S” under his/her name on the score card. If the first player to grab a spoon does NOT have a matching set, he/she gets the “S” under his/her name instead.

The person to the left of the dealer should then grab all of the cards, re-shuffle, and start the next round.

Continue playing until one of the players spells the word SCIENCE. The first player to do this, loses.

In the age of technology I'm excited to teach them games that are not video games. Most of the students had no idea what spoons was so I was happy to teach them. This allowed them to review while having fun and getting a bit competitive. I used plastic spoons for safety because when I used to play this with my cousins as a kid we were vicious with metal ones!

My students LOVE this game! I do a whole game day review when they prepare to the cell test and usually have to limit their time at this station or that's all they'll play.
