Description
Engage your class with this digital interactive mini lesson where students will choose a topic and 3 subtopics to write an informational text on. Students can work on the lesson individually on their own device or you can do together in a whole group or small group setting!
This interactive lesson for Google Slides helps students make a connection between what a topic and related subtopics are using a tree metaphor. Reach your visual learners to see that the topic is the top of the tree with the branches representing the subtopics. This explanation is a theme throughout the slides as students step by step brainstorm and decide on a topic with subtopics for their own writing. Students will be engaged with movable pieces and text boxes to write their responses. Paperless and easy to post on Google Classroom to share with your students. All text boxes are editable- meaning you can modify it for your specific classroom!
Included in the lesson are:
- Teacher's Tips
- Learning Target and Entrance Ticket
- Multiple Examples of Topics & Subtopics
- Interactive Activity Slide: Students practice matching a topic to appropriate subtopics
- Answers for Students to Check their Work
- Closing Activity: Students fill in the tree with their own topic and subtopics
Students are able to type in responses on slides and move objects to reveal information.
This lesson is created as a beginning step to prepare students to write an informational/explanatory text based on the Common Core 5th Grade Writing Standards. It can also serve as a review prior to beginning a new informational writing piece!
