Description
Problem solving is always a challenge. I find that my students skim the question and guess what they should do based on the numbers that are there (small numbers mean add and multiply, big numbers mean subtract and divide). I created this product to require students to comprehend and visualize the question being asked.
Each scenario uses the same situation and set of numbers. Students read the four different word problems, visualize what is happening, and determine what operation is needed to solve the problem. Each set of problems uses the same character, similar scenarios, and the same numbers. There are no keywords for students to rely on, since many word problems on standardized tests either don’t use those keywords or use them in an atypical way. Instead, students will grow their problem-solving skills with a comprehension basis—retelling the math story to determine what operation is needed to solve the problem.
Each set of scenarios has a symbol that matches the activity in the story. This makes it easy to check that there is one card from that set in each operation.
*Note: The purpose of this activity is to differentiate between the different operation, NOT to solve the problems. That’s why the numbers are larger in multiplication.
*Color or Black and White Options
*Answer Key Included
*Small group intervention, partner practice, independent work
*Test prep
