  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Students were very engaged during this game. It was just what I needed to target word problems!”

I hear it from teachers ALL. THE. TIME

“My students know how to multiply and how to divide with fluency, they just don't know WHEN to use operations with fractions! They are excellent at solving word problems with fractions when we are working on one specific operation, but when all operations are mixed up, it's a disaster!”

How can I use this to support word problems with fractions?

  • Math centers
  • Small group remediation
  • Tutoring or homeschool
  • Partner work
  • Whole group activity (with class discussion after each round)
  • Independent Practice
  • Take-home activity (students can even glue the word problems and bring them back)
  • Challenge for early finishers

How does this activity help students understand operations with fractions

  • As teachers, we know that solving word problems with fractions and choosing the operation for a fraction word problem are two very different skills. It’s one thing to be able to multiply fractions, but it’s quite another to know WHEN to multiply fractions.
  • This “Choose the Operation Word Problems with Fractions Game” narrows the focus.  By removing the “solve” part of the equation, students can get much more practice in a short amount of time.  This allows students to become masters at identifying operations with fractions.
  • Built-in scaffolding means that in the early rounds, students are just choosing between two commonly mixed-up operations with fractions (Addition vs. Subtraction, Multiplication vs. Division, or Addition vs. Multiplication).  Then in later rounds students must choose between all 4 operations with fractions.
  • The more students play this game, the more they begin to notice patterns when in word problems with fractions- for example- “I’ve noticed that the two quantities in multiplication problems do not have the same label, but in addition problems they usually do!”  You will be amazed by what your students notice!
  • Early finishers can always go back and solve the word problems with fractions!

Do your students SHUT DOWN when they see word problems with fractions

Mine too!  This “Choose the Operation Word Problems” game makes operations with fractions feel less scary.  It removes the barrier to entry because students know they don’t have to solve them.  They don’t even have to write anything.  They simply have to sort the word problems with fractions into categories.  The early rounds only ask students to choose between two operations with fractions.  This built-in scaffolding builds confidence and makes word problems with fractions feel more manageable to kids, especially to those who typically struggle to identify operations with fractions.

What grade levels is this Choose the Operation Word Problems Game intended for

This game is designed for 5th grade, but could easily be used as a review for any middle school (or even high school) math classroom.  I mean, be honest- have you ever taught a group of students who were just crushing it at word problems with fractions?!  Yeah, me neither…

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
Interpret multiplication as scaling (resizing), by:
