Description

This time of year calls for a fun MOVEMENT-BASED math lesson to focus your students and get the wiggles out. In this Christmas-themed obstacle course, students will solve multiplication problems that lead them through a course to save Santa and the North Pole! Positively channel student energy by having them crawl through tunnels, build with blocks, play charades, and more!

Why an obstacle course:

  • active - gets out wiggles
  • fun - kids LOVE it
  • academic - keeps you on track
  • simple to set up
  • high engagement - less management needed
  • builds community

The Specifics:

At each station, students receive two multiplication problems to discuss and solve as a group. Once marked correct they work together as a team to complete the obstacle and advance. Multiplication problems match 4th grade standards (4.NBT.5) and require students to multiply 1 x 3, 1 x 4, and 2 x 2 digit numbers and are written as story problems.

  • Obstacle 1: Winter Charades
  • Obstacle 2: Chimney Creation
  • Obstacle 3: Elf Rescue Mission
