Students are challenged to solve problems, then locate their answers in a coded alphabet and write the corresponding letter on a line to form a word. This word is the name of Santa from different countries around the world: England, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, Russia, and France.
In addition to the Secret Code page, there is additional, corresponding page with a variety of word problems that teach students more about the particular Santa. How fun! Just make sure you give the students the word problems AFTER they solve the Secret Code! :)
This is a multi-step, engaging activity that will help students master certain Common Core standards.
In some classrooms, these secret codes may prove more challenging. The process really requires students to focus. Depending on the needs of your students, you may want to demonstrate the process to them first.
