This resource focuses on how to write works-cited citations for bibliographies using the 9th edition of the MLA Handbook and does not address in-text citations.

This product follows the 9th edition of the MLA Handbook. Each task card includes all the information your students need to correctly write a bibliographic citation in MLA format. The details are listed out of order on the task cards so students can learn the proper sequence for writing the citations. There are at least 4 task cards for each type of resource.

Two 8.5" x 11" reference posters show the required MLA citation format for all the different resources this product includes. They can be used to present the information to your students prior to using the task cards, as a guide to aid students when they are using the task cards, and/or as a reference in their writing journals or writing centers.

You can have students use all the task cards or choose only some of the resources for your students to work on. Students can work individually, in small groups, or as a whole class with these task cards. An answer sheet is provided, or your students can use their notebooks or paper you supply, or they can type their answers on a computer or tablet.

Every printable task card displays a symbol to indicate what type of resource it is, for easy identification by you and your students. One page in this product explains what the symbols mean. That page also includes a glossary of terms used when writing bibliographic citations that may not be familiar to all students, which will be especially helpful to English Language Learners. Students can correct their work themselves with the provided answer key pages or you can do it if you prefer.

Both color and black-and-white versions of the printable task cards, reference posters, student answer sheet, and answer key pages are included in this MLA citations product for maximum flexibility. In the color version, task cards for each type of resource all have the same colored border.

The Google Drive version of these MLA citation task cards just includes color task cards. Each task card is on a separate slide. A template slide for students’ answers is also included and has a text box where students can type their citations. This slide can be duplicated for all the task cards your students are working on.

A list of the ELA Common Core standards this resource helps address is provided for your convenience if you work in a Common Core state.

The information for the citations comes from actual print, electronic, and performance media. The works represent a wide variety of topics and a diverse group of authors was selected to appeal to all middle school students. With these task cards, teaching your students how to correctly write citations is fun!
