Description

Build community in the classroom by actually creating a community! Each student chooses an important building or service, completes several activities within the building and together the class discusses the best placement of each business or service in a city planning exercise. In this project, students will interview their parents to discover the reasons why they decided to live in their community, brainstorm the reasons why communities are formed (share resources, company, protection, etc), discuss as a whole class the characteristics of a good citizen in the community and in the classroom, as well as compare your community to a neighboring community. With this project, students will go beyond the basic setup and function of a community into exploring the relationships within a community and between its residents.
