Classification -

This is a set of 13 interactive notebook activities that you can use to supplement your classification INB. This is 100% easy cutting to make things a bit less time consuming and easier for you!

These activities do not require an interactive notebook; you could use them as traditional classwork, as well!

The following activities are included:

Classification Cards 6 Cards for each Kingdom:

Animalia, Fungi, Plantae, Protista, Archaea, Eubacteria

Binomial Nomenclature Table Fold- students determine the scientific name of 4 organisms and define the rules of binomial nomenclature in their notebook.

Classification Reverse Flip Book- students can choose any species they'd like (usually it ends up being their favorite plant or animal) and classify it using this flip book. It is a reverse flip book, so it gets smaller with each flip to represent the smaller taxonomy levels from domain to species.

Domain and Kingdom Branch- this makes great note taking or review. Students determine characteristics among the 6 kingdoms and use them to fill in the a chart.

Interpreting Diagrams- Students look at a "snippet" of the animal kingdom and use it to answer questions about how related (or unrelated) groups of organisms are.

Fungi vs. Plant Kingdom Venn (can be any kingdoms)

Taxonomy Ladder- A flip up taxonomy ladder with a real life example that students can use for reference.

Taxonomy Ladder Warm Up- students color each organism listed that matches the description from Domain to Species (can be used as homework or classwork).

Kingdom Warm up- a fill-in-the-blank warm up or bellringer for the 6 kingdoms. Could also be used as homework or classwork.

Kingdom Pizza Wheel- Have students list information that you think they need extra help with.

Cladogram Practice- students determine the derived characters among 5 organisms and divide them into clades.

Advanced Options for High School:

Molecular Clocks- how we can use mutations to help determine evolutionary time.

Traditional vs. Evolutionary Classification- using the classic example of crabs, limpets, and barnacles, and how their classification has changed with new findings.

Very useful to reinforcing taxonomy and levels of classification. The visuals on the taxonomy triangles really helped my struggling learners better understand the differences between each level.
