I love to do speed dating activities when we are classifying. It helps to make memorizing categories and classifications more fun and engaging! Students are above to move around and interact with other students.

Classifying Real Numbers Speed Dating:

For the Speed Dating Activity, there are 27 cards.

This can also be called "Quiz, quiz, switch". I tell students that we will be doing Speed Dating today. Then I explain that Speed Dating is a way of getting to know another person where you talk to someone else for a short amount of time, ask questions, and then maybe exchange information, like a phone number or something.

With Classifying Real Numbers Speed Dating, all students are given a card (or 2 to 3 cards depending on class size). A student will go up to another student and show the student the number side and the other student should name the classifications. Both students quiz each other, switch cards, and find a different student. Decide how long this should keep going (about 5 minutes). I repeat this activity several times while we are in this unit. Usually, it is the 1st 5 minutes of class for several days.
