When I first introduced the concept that the shape my students had been calling a "triangle" since kindergarten also had other names like "equilateral" or "acute", they FREAKED OUT. This concept of hierarchical groups of shapes (5.B.G.4) was very tough for them to grasp. This game helps build their comfort level with the idea that every shape has several names and that each name corresponds with a property that gives it that name.
This game includes ten "Mystery Triangles" and for each one, students decide the name of the shape based on its sides and angles. Then students match each name with the property that gives it that name. For example- "This shape is a right triangle because it has one right angle" and "This shape is an isosceles triangle because it has exactly two congruent sides." But also, "This shape is NOT an obtuse triangle because it does not have one obtuse angle."
