Description

This problem based learning project was created for my 3rd – 5th graders to apply their knowledge of measurement to a real life situation, but also extends to practice and review skills for grades 2-8.  This activity can be done in steps throughout the year or as a full project over several days if needed. It is also an editable document so you can edit the elements to fit your specific classroom if you want to make it specific for your classroom.

· Project Description (1 page)

· Project Vocabulary Definition Sheet (1 page)

· Measurement Chart - filled in (1 page)

· Measurement Chart - with inch measurements (1 page)

· Measurement Chart - blank (1 page)

· Classroom Layout 1 foot grid (1 page)

· Classroom Layout 6 inches grid (1 page)

· Finished Student Project Examples (1 page)

Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
