Description

Teach students to sequence and summarize the picture book Saturday by Oge Mora through coding. When students apply coding concepts like sequencing and algorithms, students can retell short stories. 

Computer science is the fastest growing employment market. Students need to learn basic coding concepts such as sequencing and writing algorithms. Algorithms are the step-by-step instructions written for technology to follow. 

These activities help students recall the events in the story, in the order they happened. They also show them how to write the events like an algorithm. 

→ There are simple algorithms which are perfect for primary aged students in PreK to grades 2. They are great for students who are beginning to learn block code and/or use applications like Scratch Jr.

→ There are simple and more complex algorithms that are perfect for students in intermediate grades; Grades 2-6. These activities are great for students who are learning to use more advanced block coding and/or programs like Scratch. They also provide opportunities for older students to practice conditional programming, or IF...THEN… code. Perfect for students to think about cause and effect.

AFTER downloading this resource you’ll get:

Standards Based lesson that outlines how to use the book Saturday to teach coding concepts to students as young as 2 and as old as 12. Standards are listed below. 

2 primary sequencing sheets for students to sequence the story. Both are cut & paste, and include images of each story event. One includes a start block and the other lists the order.  

3 primary sequencing sheets for students to create an algorithm for their own spectacular Saturday. All sheets are cut & paste and include images of each activity.

2 intermediate sequencing sheets for students to sequence the story. Both are cut & paste. One sheet includes action or motion blocks for the major story events. The other sheet includes conditional blocks that engage students in the cause and effect portion of the story. 

2 intermediate sequencing sheets for students to create an algorithm for their own spectacular Saturday. One sheet includes only motion blocks and the other sheet includes conditional blocks.

Answer Keys for each sheet that goes with the story.

5 Drag and Drop slides for primary students to write sequenced algorithms. Two slides engage students in sequencing the story. Three slides are provided for students to write their own sequenced algorithms for a spectacular Saturday.
