Description

Algorithmic thinking skills are put to the test with these pencil-and-paper Coding Unplugged puzzles! Students will translate the directional code using the Programming Key to produce the secret image on a grid. This resource includes eight unique coding puzzles for students to decode and is a great no-prep activity for substitutes!

Enjoy this STEM activity anytime! - As a self-contained sub activity, an engaging supplement to any technology lesson, or a quiet & independent challenge activity for after testing!

Coding Unplugged Middle School Packet contains

  • Two Activity Sheets: Each Activity Sheet contains four puzzles/”offline codes”, complete with Programming Key and directions. Total of 8 unique Coding Unplugged puzzles
  • Worksheet - Four 5x5 grids on each worksheet for code "output"
  • Tutorial Pages - 2 pages of tutorials, walkthroughs, and tips
  • Extension Activity - Create Your Own Code
  • Individual Puzzle Cards - Great for stations, a quick warmup, or laminate and use again and again!
  • Additional page of blank 5x5 grids
  • Answer key

We needed something to fill in time during a delay when not all of our students were in attendance. This activity was perfect for this! It was easy enough but also engaging for my students. This was during a senior math class after we worked on coding Sphero balls.
