Description

This co-operative game requires students to work together to win!

It allows students to practice both coin recognition and coin counting – there are different ways of facilitating this (see further below) but it generally requires students to count and re-count an ordered collection of coins.

The coins are grouped on the board and can be denominated to assist with counting strategies such as skip counting the same coins and coin recognition.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

In this fun Piggy Bank game, students work to collect and cover (or tick off) different coins in their piggy bank to reach a given total. However, they must collect their coins and reach the total before their piggy fills up on snacks he finds around the board! More details about "how to play" are included below.

6 boards are included with varying coins and target amounts.

  • 2 Boards have a small piggy bank target of (75c) and counting includes pennies - this board may be best for lower-ability students.
  • 2 Boards have a medium target of $1.20
  • 2 Boards have a higher target of $2.50.
  • In each set of 2 boards, coins are provided with and without value denomination - i.e. the marked coins remind students of the coin values to assist lower-ability students with counting.

All boards are also provided in color and black and white. 12 boards in total.

The boards are low-prep, just print and play - all you need are counters and dice. Or laminate the boards and use dry erase to tick the coins and snack blocks.

HOW TO PLAY THIS CO-OPERATIVE GAME:

  • Print the required boards and answer keys in color or black and white. Laminate if you wish. You will also need counters to move and extra counters or whiteboard markers/pencils for ticking off or covering the piggy bank tally.
  • Students can play in partners or small groups (up to 4). It is a co-operative game where students must work together to tick off enough coins to reach their bank target before their piggy is full from eating food rather than coins (i.e. before all the SNACK blocks are ticked, but not including the last one that says “Your Piggy is Full!”)
  • Students take turns rolling a die and moving.
  • If a player lands on a coin, they tick it off (or cover with a counter) on the Piggy Bank collection at the bottom of the board. Students will need to keep a progressive total of their ticked coins to ensure they reach but do not go over their target amount. They may wish to keep track by writing a cumulative total in the “Notes” space or periodically count up the ticked off coins. You may wish to direct students to either strategy depending on your classroom focus.
  • If a player lands on a food square, a SNACK block must be ticked (or covered) indicating the Piggy is starting to get filled up with food rather than coins.
  • If a player lands on “add” or “lose” a coin, they may choose which coin to tick/cover or untick/uncover in the Piggy Bank tally. This is a good task to discuss as a group as the choice will often be strategic e.g. choose a penny to round up a total or choose a big coin to speed up success.
  • To win, the EXACT total (target) must be reached. If a player lands on a coin that would exceed their target, it must be ignored and cannot be ticked off. It is then the next player’s turn.
  • Play continues until either:
    - Enough coins are ticked off (or covered) to successfully reach (but not exceed) the target amount BEFORE all the SNACK blocks are ticked off – in which case the team wins; OR
    - All the SNACK blocks are ticked off before the target has been reached – in which case the Piggy has filled up on snacks instead of coins and the team loses!
