Description

Task:

Before we knew much about Earth, we learned how explorers set sail to discover new land. But once they found the land, what happened next? How do people colonize a new land?

Today, we are dealing with a new issue regarding colonization. We know that Earth has limited resources, and the planet will not survive forever. But then the question remains, once our planet is inhabitable, where do we go next? Many researchers are looking to the final frontier for a solution- space! Could we explore and colonize on a new planet? How would we do so?

In this unit, you will research how we colonized in the past, the environments and possibilities of different planets and celestial objects, and create a proposal of where and how to colonize a new place to prepare for future relocation.

Overview:

1. Research and fill in information about planets and celestial objects on the planet organizer (available digitally as a collaborative GoogleDoc or print version). Use the information to create a planet poster describing each planet and object and if it would be potentially habitable for us in the future.

2. Use your research to decide the best place to colonize in the future. Write a paragraph about how your colony will meet basic needs and how it will function in the future.

3. Create your colony! Choose from three project options, a space journal, a 3D model, or a panoramic poster to show and explain how your colony will look and function.

4. Complete a STEM challenge for landing your supplies on your planet. Complete the design process to test and improve an egg drop project that represents landing a space rover.
