Annotation Bookmarker – How We Use It

I use this annotation bookmarker to remind students how to color-code their annotations while reading. It serves as a visual guide so students know which color to use and what type of information to look for in the text.

When I want students to focus on specific paragraphs or sections, I assign color-coded highlighting (for example, one color for main ideas, another for details, vocabulary, or evidence).

Steps Students Follow:

  1. Read the assigned paragraph carefully.
  2. Highlight the text using the correct color based on the bookmarker key.
  3. After highlighting, write the information in the note-taking section using their own words.
  4. Use the notes to help with discussion questions, summaries, or written responses.

This process helps students:

  • Stay focused while reading
  • Organize their thinking visually
  • Connect highlighted text to meaningful notes
  • Build strong annotation and study skills
