Description

Engage your students while they practice the skill of combining like terms with this self-checking digital resource. Similar to an escape room, as students work, they will begin to reveal clues that will help them to crack a code and unlock new sections.

This activity is intended for students in middle and high school math classes. This activity requires students to write their answer in standard from (variable then constant).

This resource can be used in a variety of ways, including independent practice or for homework. The activity can also be used for small group work, rotations, and whole group work! It is great as a review activity before an assessment or in lieu of a worksheet when just learning the topic.

This activity is for use with Google Sheets only. It is self-checking and includes automatic grading. Please see the video preview for for how this activity works. To view all questions, see the PDF preview.

Question Breakdown:

  • there are a total of 15 expressions written in a variety of ways where students will have to determine which terms are like terms
  • answers must be written in standard from (variable first)

**Please see the previews to see exactly what questions are included in this activity.

How these activities work: When students open an activity, they will see questions 1 - 5. As they answer the questions, parts to the code they need to crack will begin to appear. Students will use the designated wheel to match letters/numbers with letters/numbers. After they have answered question 1 - 5 and attempted to crack the code, the activity will let students know which answers are right (green) or wrong (red). Students can then correct any incorrect answers. Once they have successfully completed a section, the next section will appear.

This activity is self-grading however will only show updated scores when sections are completed. This means, students will not know which answers are correct/incorrect by their score changing until they have answered everything in a section (just like the green/red answer spaces).

This activity requires no prep once added to your Google Drive and includes a student version and an answer key.
