Engage students in a comic con right in your library media center!

Students love graphic novels, superheroes, and pop culture. These are all of the things that make up a Comic Con. Since we can’t bring students to a Comic Con, bring one to them; right in their Library Media Center!

After downloading this resource you will receive resources to create a Comic Con experience for PreK - Grade 6 students to experience Graphic Novels in a new way. The options are endless for how you can use this resource! You can use a few activities a week over a month or so, use a handful of activities during one week, or use a mix of some for whole group instruction and conversation and stations.

This resource includes: 

  • 3 Standards Based lessons to meet the specific developmental needs of grade bands. One for PreK - Grade 1, another for Grades 2 and 3, and another for Grades 4 and 5. Standards are listed below. 
  • 40 Task Cards to quickly identify stations. Some task cards include QR Codes for students to scan and access videos or games. Games are Graphic Novel or Comic themed, and some include coding. Videos follow copyright law and are author interviews or illustrators showing how to draw their popular graphic novel characters. 
  • 3 Interactive Structures to use with different grade bands. Each structure includes directions to set up the activity and prompts for student reflection or discussion.
  • 3-2-1 Author Interview page for students in grades 2-6 to use before, during and after viewing an interview with one of their favorite authors. 
  • 4 Superhero books that are bilingual. Great for students to color on their own!
  • Superhero make & take scoot activity. This is a great option for students to complete as a whole class.
  • Slideshow to facilitate learning around Graphic Novels. Includes videos of authors reading excerpts from their own Graphic Novels, 2 Superhero Brain Breaks, Reflection questions to wrap up Comic Con stations.

This activity meets the following standards:

AASL:

  • Generating products that illustrate learning.
  • Using a variety of communication tools and resources.
  • Problem solving through cycles of design, implementation, and reflection.
  • Persisting through self-directed pursuits by tinkering and making.

ISTE

  • Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication.
  • Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.

CCSS

  • Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

CSTA

  • Select and operate appropriate software to perform a variety of tasks, and recognize that
  • users have different needs and preferences for the technology they use.
  • Create programs that include sequences, events, loops, and conditionals.
